As reported by Variety on June 10, Snap—the parent company of Snapchat—has acquired Illumix, a spatial augmented reality (AR) company.

Under the agreement, Snap will utilize Illumix’s technology and platform in the development of its Spectacles smart glasses. Variety reports that Snap will also retain the majority of Illumix’s employees.

Founded in 2017 by CEO Kirin Sinha, Illumix focuses on augmented reality (AR) products that connect digital content with real-world environments. Additionally, the company works on applying artificial intelligence (AI) to physical spaces, including technologies designed to transform environments.

Illumix's platform provides spatial AI technology for mapping, positioning, and connecting digital content with real-world environments.

According to Variety, Snap is interested in Illumix because the company is dedicated to extending mapping technology into the realm of real-world experiences. This acquisition will provide Snap with additional mapping technology and talent, supporting the development of its "Specs" products and advancing its R&D in AR hardware and software.

Snap established Specs Inc., a standalone subsidiary focused on AR glasses, in January of this year. The company is set to appear at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) in Long Beach, California, on June 16, where Snap co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel is expected to share further updates on the company's Specs AR glasses platform.

In its Q1 2026 letter to investors, the company stated: "We are excited about the upcoming launch of Specs smart glasses and our mission to make computing more human-centric. For over a decade, we have firmly believed that smart glasses will represent the most significant shift in computing platforms since the smartphone. Snap is uniquely positioned to shape this future by bringing together a scaled augmented reality platform, a vast developer ecosystem, and a vertically integrated hardware and software stack—encompassing Lens Studio, Snap OS, and Specs."

By integrating Illumix’s spatial augmented reality and mapping capabilities, the acquisition will support Snap’s efforts regarding Specs and its broader augmented reality development ecosystem. Snap did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.
