Recently, a latest peer-reviewed study from the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) presented surprising data: surgeons wearing Apple Vision Pro as the primary display device during lacrimal duct clearance surgery completed the surgery 19% faster than doctors using traditional displays.
This study, published in the journal AJO International, compared 32 cases of endoscopic lacrimal duct obstruction clearance surgery. In half of the surgeries, doctors wore Vision Pro headsets, and the video footage from the endoscope was directly projected into the doctor's field of view in real-time, without the need to look up at a separate monitor placed across the room.
In this way, doctors do not need to switch their gaze back and forth between operating instruments and viewing screens, always maintaining a natural forward posture, significantly reducing neck twisting and distraction during surgery.
The research team also pointed out that compared to bulky and expensive traditional medical display stand systems, Vision Pro has significant advantages in cost and space occupation. However, researchers also cautiously emphasize that this is still a small-scale preliminary study, and to draw definitive conclusions, larger clinical trials are still needed for verification.
Although the price of $3699 is controversial in the consumer market, the "cost-effectiveness" and flexibility demonstrated by Vision Pro may be opening up a fast lane for mixed reality technology to enter the serious medical field in the face of medical equipment procurement lists that often cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
